Welcoming a new baby into the family is a whirlwind of joy, exhaustion, and tiny miracles. At Precious Keepsakes Photography, we know that those first few weeks fly by in a blur. A newborn photography session is the perfect way to freeze time, but we also know that the idea of getting a baby (and yourself!) ready for a photoshoot can feel a bit overwhelming. To help you enjoy the experience, we’ve put together this essential guide on how to prepare for a smooth, relaxing, and successful newborn session.
1. Timing is Everything The "sweet spot" for those sleepy, curled-up newborn poses is typically between 5 and 14 days old. During this window, babies sleep more soundly and haven’t yet developed common newborn acne or colic.
Pro Tip: Book your session during your second trimester.
We will pencil in a date based on your due date and adjust once the baby officially arrives!
2. The "Full Tummy" Rule A well-fed baby is a happy, sleepy baby. We recommend feeding your little one right before you arrive at the studio or just as we are getting started.
Top off: Even if they ate an hour ago, a quick "top-off" feeding helps them fall into that deep lethargy required for those adorable poses. Bring/Have extra: Whether you are breastfeeding or bottle-feeding, bring more milk than you think you’ll need. Modeling is hungry work!
3. Keep Things Warm and Cozy Newborns lose body heat quickly, especially when we are transitioning them between outfits or wraps. The Room Temp: Expect the room to be quite warm (around 80°F). We do this to keep the baby comfortable while they are undressed.
What to wear: Since the studio will be toasty, we suggest parents dress in light, breathable layers so you don’t overheat while we work.
4. Wardrobe and Styling For the baby, "less is more." We provide a wide array of professional wraps, headbands, and props. The Arrival Outfit: Dress the baby in a simple, loose-fitting sleeper that zips or snaps up the front. Avoid anything that has to be pulled over their head, which might wake them up when we undress them. For the Parents: Stick to neutrals, creams, or pastels. Avoid heavy patterns or large logos that can distract from the baby’s face. Coordinate colors without being perfectly "matchy-matchy."
5. Managing Expectations (The "P" Word) Let’s talk about the one thing every parent worries about:
Pee and Poop. It happens! In fact, it happens at almost every single session. Please do not feel embarrassed. Our wraps and backdrops are easily washable, and we build plenty of time into the session to handle clean-ups and extra cuddles.
Quick Checklist for Your Diaper Bag:
Item Why you need it Extra Diapers/Wipes For the inevitable "surprises. "Pacifier Even if they don't usually use one, it helps soothe them during transitions. Change of Clothes -One for baby, and a spare shirt for Mom/Dad (just in case!). Personal Mementos A special heirloom blanket or a name sign you'd like to include. Relax and Enjoy
The most important tip we can give you is to relax. Babies are highly sensitive to your energy. If you are stressed, they will be too. Sit back, have a snack, and watch us capture the beauty of your growing family.
